Here’s the deal guys:
After coming home from the gym or having your hands covered in grease, you need a soap that will not only perform well to get your skin incredibly clean, but also you need one that isn’t going to dry your skin.
So what’s the solution?
While you could share a unisex soap or body wash with your significant other, you will be missing out on all the great benefits that a proper body wash that was designed for a man’s skin has to offer.
Check this out:
A man’s skin is different from that of a woman’s. Us men have much more thicker and coarser skin.
In addition, we have increased collagen levels making us look on average about 15 years younger than those of the opposite sex (source).
The problem though is that men often times use inferior products that don’t account for their naturally different skin.
While you could of course use a bar of soap to lather up in the shower, body washes make the process much quicker and tend to deliver really effective results.
With the recent of explosion of men’s grooming products on the market, we wanted to round up the very best men’s body washes that you can order with a few clicks of a mouse.

Get Better Results With Your Next Body Wash
If it’s your first ever time picking up a body wash, you will need to also any one of the following:
- Wash cloth
Don’t worry loofahs aren’t just for wives, girlfriends, or moms – plenty of men use these incredibly useful things.
However, do you know which one should be best for you?
If you have sensitive skin or you are simply not looking for a terribly deep exfoliation, then one of the best options out there is going to be a sponge.
Of course, you don’t want to get a Scotch sponge that might be resting under your skin that has a brillo backing. Instead, we highly recommend checking out a soft sponge that will do an effective job at treating your skin gently.
If you are looking to get a bit deeper exfoliation, then a loofah is actually going to be a great item to pick up. Loofahs are typically harvested from natural sponges and will be able to adequately get all the dead skin cells off any part of your body with just a gentle scrub.
Some loofahs do come with a stick attachment, which is great for men who want to wash their entire back or perhaps have some mobility issues and want to scrub their feet.
Lastly, and of course the one many men likely use, is just going to be your standard washcloth. Washcloths stand somewhere in the middle between loofahs and sponges when it comes to just how abrasive they are when applied to your skin.
Generally speaking, it comes down to personal preference on the level of exfoliation you are aiming for when taking a shower.
Get The Right Body Wash For Your Skin Type
Now if your skin is dry, acne-prone, sensitive, or simply tends to cause odor rather quickly there are a few things you can look out for when picking up a body wash.
Here’s a brief summary on the different skin types and what to look out for:
Of course, there is a multitude of reasons on why you may have dry skin. From allergic or environmental reasons to simply atopic dermatitis and diet, even the best body wash may not be able to solve the problem. This article does a great job at explaining all the different reasons your skin may be dry.
However, for most men, a simple change of habits or soap can make a huge impact.
First and foremost, you want to shower once every couple of days. There are a few reasons for this, but most importantly it has to do with your sebaceous glands.
These glands that are found at the base of every hair follicle produce an oil called sebum oil. It’s the job of sebum oil to ensure that not only your hair stays well-nourished and moisturized, but also your skin as well.
Of course, one of the key ingredients you want to look for in your body wash, is one that contains oils or moisturizers that naturally complement the sebum oil. This will help give your skin an overall better appearance between showers.
Also, when you hop out of the shower, you want to typically pat to dry instead of vigorous drying that some men prefer.
Aside from showering, body lotions and getting an adequate amount of water daily can make a difference too.
Should you have acne on your back or in various places throughout your body, there are some body washes on the market that you will want to consider.
Most notably those that contain Benzoyl Peroxide have proven to be quite effective at reducing the occurrence of mild acne.
As many studies have found, Benzoyl Peroxide is a common, and effective, medication that has worked well for many men.
In order to get the best results for your skin, we would recommend using a washcloth or loofah as they tend to carry less bacteria than sponges.
Opposite of dry skin, men with oily skin type are those who tend to generate excess sebum oil.
Not only can this lead to shiny spots on your skin, but in worse cases, may also cause mild amounts of pimples throughout your body where oil build up is excessive.
In order to unclog your pores, body washes that contain small amounts AHA or BHA (salicylic acid) will help to naturally remove oil buildup without over drying your skin.
This results in a skin complexion throughout your entire body that will be a bit more matte and even.
While most men who suffer from mild to severe cases of body odor will reach for body washes with strong fragrances in order to mask any embarrassing scents, if you want to reduce body odor from occurring, you should get a antibacterial body wash.
A good antibacterial body wash will stop the spread of bacteria that emits foul scents that is found naturally on your skin.
Thankfully there are plenty of great body washes for men on the market today that prove effective at eliminating body odor.
When finding the right body wash for sensitive skin, you will need to pay attention to two primary factors:
Both scents and chemicals may cause irritation for men who have a severely sensitive skin.
Brands like NIVEA and many others do offer very simple and effective body washes that will still get you clean in a non-irritating manner.

Much like the Mahogany body wash that we reviewed above, this wash includes both shea butter along with aloe vera for maximum hydration and nourishment of your skin. Therefore if you are experiencing dryness and flaking on your skin, this wash may perfect for you.

Many men are familiar with American Crew’s hair products given that they are in barbershops across the country. In addition to hair styling, they also make pre shave oils to help ensure a much more comfortable shave which we recently reviewed. In the latest addition of their line up, this body wash makes for a fine addition.
This 3-in-1 body wash is designed to work on completely eliminating body odor while also working well to clean up the rest of your body.
With a mixture of some synthetic ingredients along with natural oils, the primary cleansing agent is actually derived from raw vegetables. Generally the scent is classified by American Crew as being fresh and clean. Lastly, this product is made in the USA.

Largely known for their lip balms, Burt’s Bees enters the foray into the mens grooming world with this body wash that was designed specifically for men in mind. While it might be exclusive to body washing only, this wash was made from 99.9% natural ingredients.
One of the major components of the ingredient list for this body wash is coconut oil, which can deliver a plethora of health benefits for both your skin and well being.
Regarding the scent of this body wash, its largely considered to be of a woodsy profile followed by some bright citrus after tones.
Overall this is a terrific body wash to try out, especially if you depend on Burt’s Bees balms for those extremely dry winters or desert summers.
- 99.9% All Natural
- Woodsy scent smells amazing
- Trusted brand that will deliver great results
- Some may find the lather a bit lacking
One of the most popular and iconic brands when it comes to body washes, this product has been design specifically for a mans naturally rougher and coarser skin. They make a splash in this review with their Deep Clean body wash.
Designed with purifying grains that get deep into your pores, this body wash will leave you feeling both invigorated and clean once you hop out of the shower.
While others in this review are a 3-in-1 solution, the Dove Men+Care Deep Clean body wash is only suitable for both your face and skin. Therefore, you will want to steer clear of using this as a shampoo.
Lastly, the scent of the Deep Clean body wash is more of a ‘Fresh’ scent profile that should satisfy most men out there.
- Plenty of great scents
- Works for both face and body
- Perfect for men who want quality on a budget
- Some men may want a ‘cleaner’ ingredient label
While a relatively newer entrant to the mens grooming world, Every Man Jack makes a variety of all natural products. In fact we reviewed their all natural deodorant in this post. What makes Every Man Jack stand apart from the crowd is their ingredient list. While big names may contain rougher chemicals in their products – in this body wash you will find castor oil, clary sage oil, and rosemary oil to just name a few.
These oils will help to keep your skin naturally hydrated throughout the course of the day. If you generally have sensitive skin then this body wash may be worth checking out. Ingredients aside this product is cruelty free and also absent of any synthetic dyes.
- No-frills and gets the job done
- Budget friendly body wash for daily use
- Easy to pick-up both online and in stores
- Some men found the scent lighter
While many may think that L’Occitane is reserved for just women and can be found at your local mall, they do actually provide a body wash that can be used for men as well – all without smelling too feminine. The body wash itself is pretty versatile in that it can be used on both your entire body and head.
Also worth mentioning is that this body wash does contain a plethora of essential oils that will leave a pleasant after scent upon use. On the side of the label you can find juniper, sandalwood, immortelle, and rosemary oils.
Lastly, and most importantly L’Occitane included shea butter as a moisturizing and conditioning agent to help ensure that this body wash keeps your skin well nourished through natural properties long after use.
- Heavy reliance on natural ingredients instead of chemicals
- Great for men with dry skin as it contains several moisturizing ingredients
- Works for both body and hair
- Stronger scent may not be good for men with sensitive skin
This luxurious body wash by Mahogany Woods is by and far one of the best all around body washes for men for a few reasons. If you are aiming for that manly “woodsy” smell that brings out your inner lumberjack without smelling to completely overpowering, then this body wash strikes a good balance. The scent is derived from bourbon vanilla mixed with mahogany that just simply smells amazing.
Scent aside, what we really love is a few outstanding ingredients. First and foremost this product contains Vitamin E and Aloe Vera which will do wonders for the nutrients for your skin. Vitamin E can be incredibly helpful in warding off dry skin. Also included in the ingredients list is shea butter that is a natural conditioner found in both mens and women’s beauty products.
Overall this is a great body wash that should rinse away cleanly from your body once you are done showering without leaving any sort of oily or slimy film afterwards. Definitely worth investing in.
- Delivers the perfect woodsy smell
- Works for both body and hair
- Can be hard to find both online and at stores
If Old Spice isn’t making some sweet commercials featuring the legendary Terry Crews (that guy is awesome – here is a really cool Reddit IAMA he did awhile back), they are developing great smelling deodorants and body washes.
This body wash by Old Spice will do a great job at getting you clean. However, there is a kit limitation inherently with this product. First and foremost, it’s absent of a pump design like many others out there, which may make it a bit cumbersome to handle in the shower with soapy hands, and secondly its only a body wash. Therefore it’s not designed to be used on your face or hair (get a separate face wash instead).
If you like the classic Old Spice scents, then this is definitely one worth checking out.
- Terrific smell is loved by many
- Affordable and available everywhere
- Only for body washing (not hair or face like others)
This tea tree based body wash by Oleavine is a completely all natural body wash that will be effective at washing your skin completely clean naturally. Geared to be used on both your body and feet, the tea tree oil contained within this product is naturally an antiseptic that will help to fight any odor causing bacteria along with jock itch, foot odor, and other general funguses. You can even find tea tree oils in popular products like beard oil as well.
Bacterial fighting properties aside, this body wash is loaded with a ton of natural carrier oils that will also ensure that your skin stays incredibly moisturized and nourished throughout the entirety of your day.
Much like the Every Man Jack body wash, this body wash is also cruelty free for the animal-tested conscious consumers out there as all the ingredients are plant derived.
- Contains only natural and organic ingredients
- Invigorating scent
- Soothes itchy skin, eliminates odor, improves complexion
- May cause irritation for those with sensitive skin
Common Questions Men Have About Body Wash
During our research we saw time and time again men having questions about body wash. We figured it best to answer them here should any of them be on your mind:
Old Spice vs. Dove Body Wash – Which One Should You Pick?
It’s a tough call between these two brands, simply because they are so different from one another.
Old Spice body wash is a great smelling body wash that delivers strong results.
While Dove Men+Care doesn’t have nearly as intoxicating as a scent as Old Spice – many men love it’s purifying grains for a deeper clean.
Go with Dove Men+Care if you prefer a deeper cleanse.
Go with Old Spice if you want that classic manly smell.
It’s a personal preference.
As we stated elsewhere in this article, a bar of soap and body wash both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Notably a bar of soap is great for travel and generally performs better in targeted areas.
Body washes are great for cleaning large areas of your body more efficiently and effectively. In addition, a body wash applied to a loofah is a great way to wash hard to reach areas of your body such as your feet and back.
How Do You Choose The Right Body Wash?
It all comes down to your skin type.
Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive, or acne prone skin, we recommend getting a body wash that targets any one of these conditions.
If you have healthy skin, then any of the ones featured in this article should be fine – you can pick based on personal scent preference.
Premium body washes such as those from Jack Black, Brickell, and more are good versatile picks only if your personal budget allows.
Can Body Wash Cure Jock Itch?
Jock Itch is a fungal infection and should be treated by an anti-fungal cream such as Lotrimin.
While body wash does target dirt and grime, a medicinal cream such as Lotrimin will be more effective and treat it quicker.
Types of Body Wash
When you take a quick search at popular online marketplaces, you will find that body washes come in many different varieties.
Therefore, to help make sense of everything, we are going to break out some of the key differences between all the popular body wash variants available to you today:
Bar Soap vs. Shower Gel vs. Body Wash
While many of these may sound obvious, but we wanted to take a quick minute to talk about the nuances between soaps, gels, and washes:
Perfect for travel and daily use, bar soaps are great at getting targeted areas clean (i.e. hands, stomach, groin, etc.).
However, where a bar of soap largely comes up short is when you need to either clean in hard to reach areas or generating a rich lather suitable for a loofah.
Secondly, bar soaps typically have stronger cleansing agents, making them one-dimensional compared to body washes as they can’t be used as a shampoo either.
Given that the FDA doesn’t have a strict oversight on labeling and definitions of cleansing products, many companies may use the terms shower gel and body wash interchangeably.
However, we did find during our research that most shower gels tend to be much thicker than body washes and will deliver a richer lather.
We did find some experts making mention that shower gels are a little bit more effective at reducing eczema as well.
Unlike shower gels that tend to be clear, body washes gravitate towards a more milky or soapy consistency.
Beyond consistency, body washes can contain many moisturizing and exfoliating properties (more on this in a minute).
Best applied with a washcloth, sponge, or loofah, a body wash is an efficient and effective way to get yourself clean.
Variants of Body Washes
As you saw in our reviews, within the body wash category, you will have many sub-categories that specialize in different areas.
Outside of body washes that are made for different skin scenarios (i.e. dry skin, body odor, oily skin, acne, etc.), there are also body washes made with exfoliation or moisturizing properties.
Here’s a bit of detail on each of them:
Many body washes containing exfoliators such as pumice crystals, jojoba beads, glycolic acid, etc. are a great way to get a deeper cleaning on your skin that ultimately rids more dirt and oil.
However, you must proceed with caution here.
Using an exfoliator daily may cause dryness or mild irritation on your skin.
So, make sure that you use a body scrub in tandem with a moisturizing body wash to offset any dryness.
Body washes that are marked as moisturizers are a great way to melt years off your appearance.
Many of the body washes we reviewed today contain a plethora of moisturizers through both natural and chemical ingredients – notably jojoba oil, glycerin, etc.
If you have dry skin, make sure that you go with a body wash that is focused on delivering rich moisture.
How To Use Body Wash
While using a body wash may seem obvious to some, we wanted to put together this simple 6 step process to remind you on how you can get the most out of your next body wash:
1. Set The Water To Warm (Not Hot)
When taking a shower, don’t overdo it with the heat. While it may feel great as it can loosen your muscles, an extremely hot water temperature can cause your skin to dry out – counteracting all the moisturizers found in your body wash.
Take it down a few notches and go with a shower that is set at a moderate temperature.
2. Use Your Cleaning Tool of Choice
While some men may be used to simply using a bar of soap without any washcloth, when using a body wash you will want to apply it to either a washcloth, loofah, or sponge.
This will provide more effective results than if you were to simply rub the body wash onto you with just your bare hands.
When pouring out the body wash, go with about a half-dollar sized amount to start and then adjust if necessary.
3. Generate A Rich Lather
Before you start scrubbing your body clean, be sure to take a few seconds to generate a rich lather on your washcloth, loofah, or sponge.
This will provide a better and more consistent result than if you were to start scrubbing onto your body immediately.
4. Rub Mildly Into Your Skin
Many men love to scrub as hard as they can into their skin to get clean.
However, this simply isn’t necessary.
Over scrubbing may cause mild irritation and dryness. Therefore, when using a body wash, just use a moderate amount of pressure.
5. Rinse Thoroughly
Once you are done cleaning your entire body, make sure you rinse thoroughly.
Give yourself a quick check over and see if any areas still smell due to body odor or are problem areas that need extra attention (i.e. patches of acne) and repeat the process.
6. Dry Yourself Off
As was the case when cleaning, when it comes to drying yourself off, there is no reason that you need to rub the towel on your skin aggressively.
Simply use a moderate amount of pressure or pat dry.
Finding The Perfect Body Wash: Selection Process
Finding the best body wash for men in 2020 was a difficult challenge.
With so many great brands out there, it was tough to decide between them all. This is why we decided to separate our review into categories (i.e. best body wash for dry skin, oily skin, acne, etc.). We hope that this proved useful in deciding the next body wash that will be perfect for you.
