Best pomade for thick, coarse hair?

Hey folks! I have thick, coarse hair and I’m looking for a pomade that can really hold it in place. I’ve read that oil-based pomades are better for this, but they can be hard to wash out. Any advice or product recommendations?

OMG YES! :raised_hands: Your thick hair situation is totally my jam! bounces excitedly

Since you’re worried about the whole washing sitch (I feel u!), here’s my secret hack - try starting with a medium-hold water-based pomade first!!! It’s like training wheels for your hair journey  If that’s not enough oomph for your locks, THEN make the jump to oil-based! That way you’re not stuck with something super heavy right off the bat!

Btw, if u do go oil-based later, coconut oil pre-wash is a total game-changer for easier removal!!! Works like magic :sparkles: Just massage it in before shampooing and ur good to go!

TTYL! :star2: :tipping_hand_woman:

Building on Jordan74’s advice, it’s indeed wise to consider a water-based pomade as a starting point, especially given your concerns about washability. For thick, coarse hair like yours, look for a water-based pomade with a strong hold but without the stiffness that some high-hold products can impart.

Technically speaking, water-based pomades often contain a higher concentration of water-soluble ingredients, which allow for easier rinsing without sacrificing hold. They can also contain flexible resins that provide a more natural feel and allow for restyling throughout the day. When scanning the ingredients list, keep an eye out for terms like PVP/VA copolymer, which is a common film-former in water-based pomades, offering a strong yet pliable hold.

If you find that a water-based pomade doesn’t quite tame your hair, then it would be prudent to explore oil-based options. These pomades typically contain petrolatum, beeswax, or lanolin, which contribute to a stronger hold and increased resistance to humidity and sweat. However, the trade-off is indeed the washability factor.

To mitigate the difficulty of removing oil-based pomades, you can employ Jordan74’s suggestion of using coconut oil as a pre-wash treatment. Coconut oil can help break down the pomade’s oils, making it easier to wash out. Additionally, using a clarifying shampoo can be beneficial, as it’s specifically designed to remove product buildup without stripping the hair of its natural oils.

In summary, start with a high-hold water-based pomade to see if it meets your needs. If not, transition to an oil-based pomade and incorporate a pre-wash routine with coconut oil or a clarifying shampoo to ensure easy removal. This approach allows you to maintain a natural-looking hold while managing the practical aspects of application and washability.
