Where Can You Buy Your Next Beard Oil From?

Beards in general are all of the rage now.

As you may have noticed in my previous posts, there is a lot that goes on in order to maintain your beard properly!

From beard balm, beard oil, beard combs, beard brushes, beard wax, or heck even dying your beard, there is a massive market that exists that strictly serves men and their beards.

Before I fast forward and jump straight into the retailers that sell beard related products, its important to know why beard oil is so important in the first place.

The Importance Of Using a Beard Oil

One of the biggest factors that any guy would want to use beard oil (especially if they are growing out a yeard – year long beard) is to completely nix out the prevalence of beardruff.

What’s beardruff you are sitting there scratching your beard wondering?

Well its exactly as you might have guessed – dandruff that comes out of your beard.

Now before you get grossed out, hear me out on why beard oil is so critical in reining this in.

First off, beardruff may be caused by a couple of things, first (and likely the cause of it), is that when you grow out a beard, the follicles from your beard begin to literally suck out all the nutrients from your skin.

Just like a tree needs water, your beard also needs its proper nourishment.

Well when your skin becomes dehydrated and you start itching your beard because its so dry, the prevalence of beardruff begins to occur.

This is where beard oil plays a critical role!

Before I jump into the why, I still need to cover the other reason for beardruff.

If you have other skin conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis, this may be the cause of your dandruff.  If you think you may fall into this category, be sure to contact your dermatologist in order to see if beard oil is safe to apply (fyi – beard oil is all natural ingredients).

As I was mention the start of beardruff by simply growing out a thick and long beard, beard oil can help get rid of it completely.

But why?

Overview On How Beard Oil Is Made

As a 30,000′ view of the beard oil process its important to know a few things.

First off beard oil is made primarily of two types of ingredients carrier and essential oils.

Think of it this way:

Carrier oils is like the bowl of tomato soup and essential oils are like the oyster crackers you put on top.

This sounds like nonsense…

But hear me out…

Carrier oil makes up about 95-99% of the beard oil you see in the market place today.

If its your first ever time buying beard oil I would recommend that you go with one that has jojoba as its primary carrier oil (nearly all vendors list the types of plant oils used in their products – if you see one without their ingredients listed, I would advise that you avoid that brand).

But why jojoba?

Jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) is one of the best oils to get (especially if this is your first ever time buying beard oil).

Here’s the deal:

Of all of the carrier oils, jojoba is will be the one that is closest to the natural oils that your skin produces.

So therefore it naturally makes it a great starter oil for your beard oil repertoire!

Essential oils on the other hand make up the remaining 1-5%.

If its such a small amount then why is essential oil necessary?

For a few reasons actually!

Essential oils while only make up a small part of beard oil, pack a heck of a punch in the mixture.

They give the beard oil a TON of fragrance.

So if you want to smell like the Lauterbrunnen Valley nestled in the Swiss alps or like your in the deep woods along the Appalachian Mountains, essential oils can be mixed together to evoke that same sense of smell.

With scents ranging from cedarwood to lemon and everything in between you can truly get pretty creative scents when it comes to beard oil.

While scents are only one facet to the essential oils, there are also other great benefits that you can get from it.

For instance something like tea tree essential oil is great for further combating beardruff and acne!  Plus its all completely natural, so you aren’t putting any crazy chemicals on your face.

There are also other essential oils that may help increase blood flow benefits as well.

Point is to definitely check out the contents of the beard oil and what is contained within the bottle (more often than not beard oil companies will list out all the carrier and essential oils contained).

My personal recommendation is that if the ingredients are missing from the side of the bottle you may want to steer clear of it – personally I would want to know what I am applying on my face everyday.

Last point to bring up when looking at both carrier and essential oils is the name of them on the bottle.

Some beard oil companies try to make their oil sound much more fancier by having the scientific names of the oil instead of just spelling it out.

As you can see they ingredients that sound fancy like simmondsia chinensis oil is simply Jojoba Oil!

A quick Google search can easily translate each one of the ingredients for you.

What To Watch For When Buying Beard Oil

Just like anything online there are always a few things that you need to watch out for when trying to find out where to buy beard oil.

As mentioned in the prior section, you want to make sure that the oils are listed along side the product.

Secondly, beware of shipping policies.

When going to the small boutique beard oil companies and ordering directly from them, you have to pay shipping (about $5 for a single bottle of beard oil).

Which being that beard oil is about $20 to $25 a bottle, can be a large portion of the cost.

Personally I would recommend always checking to see if they are an online retailer that provides free shipping prior to ordering straight from them.

More often than not, if they have their own storefront, they likely also sell at least a couple of their products also on Amazon.

Popular Online Retailers and Companies For Purchasing Beard Oil

As I was eluding to earlier there are a TON of beard oil vendors out there!  While I would like to break down all the popular brands, it seems that for every one that closes, three more will pop up.

I used to maintain a list of vendors on this very page, but it got WAY to unwieldy to keep tabs on them as the page frequently needed revisions.

Therefore, I modified the list to include online retailers that are likely to stay in business for the long term that additionally offer up quality beard oils.  Here are a few that I would recommend checking out:

  1. Amazon
  2. Walmart
  3. Target
  4. Kiehl’s
  5. Art of Shaving
  6. Wild Willies
  7. Detroit Grooming
  8. West Coast Shaving
  9. Huckberry
  10. Jack Black

Not only do you get the convenience of being able to compare one vendor against another – but here’s the biggest thing:

Free shipping on most of them!

It’s the best way to try out the different companies without throwing away your hard earned cash on expensive shipping.

Should You Skip The Cost of Beard Oil?

Beard oil is a critical part of the beard maintenance process – especially if you want to make sure that you have your beard nice and soft.

However, if you have a long beard, you might find yourself burning through beard oil quicker than you realize.

One of the best recommendations I can give for guys that are heavy users of beard oil is to make their own homemade batch of the stuff.

If you feel inclined to give it a shot – I would highly recommend you check out my insanely in-depth guide on how to make your own beard oil.

If you find yourself getting good at making your own, before you know it you might very well be the next beard oil vendor featured on this list ????

What About Buying This Stuff In The Wild?

On your quest of deciding where to buy beard oil from, you might be asking yourself – does this stuff even exist in brick and mortar shops?

Well…

Yes but penetration is relatively light.

If you head to your local Walmart, chances are that you won’t find but maybe one (two max) beard oils on the shelf.

Instead you are going to want and try giving a few of the men’s barbershops in the area a call and see if they have any in stock. Typically if they do, it will be limited, but that can definitely vary from place to place. So if you are in a pinch to get beard oil in the next day, pick up the phone and call around.

Otherwise, I would recommend ordering it online.
