Hi, I’m Shawn Burns.

The owner and author behind Tools of Men.

I’m Shawn Burns, the owner and author behind Tools of Men. I started this site in 2015 to help men make sense of grooming products and build a routine that works for them.

I write about shaving, beard care, and everyday grooming. My hands-on reviews come from using the products myself: loading a razor, working up a lather, taking photographs, and seeing how my skin feels after the shave.

What you’ll find here

In my hands-on reviews, you can see the products, the test conditions, and the results. I’ve reviewed razors such as the Merkur 38C and Merkur 34C, shaving creams and soaps, and products such as Dr. Squatch Pine Tar soap. Some reviews also include a video of the test.

I pay attention to the details that matter in use: a slippery handle, lather that fades too quickly, an uncomfortable pass, or a product that works well but costs too much to use every day. I want you to understand the tradeoffs before you buy.

The site also has grooming guides and tools such as the shaving grain mapper. A researched guide is different from a hands-on test; I describe my own experience where I’ve used a product.

My approach to reviews

A good result for me is useful information, but your skin, hair, technique, and preferences may differ. I explain what I used and what I noticed so you can judge whether the experience applies to you.

My reviews use a ten-point rating scale. The rating explanation describes how I use it, and each review gives the context behind the score.

Independence and disclosure

Tools of Men is independently owned and operated by me. I don’t accept paid reviews or let brands revise my opinions. When a company provides a product sample, I disclose it in the review.

Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through one, I may earn a commission that helps support the site. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. You can read more in the terms and disclosure.
