Men Over 30 Should Be Using This Product Every Single Day

Eye creams have been around for years, but it wasn’t until the past decade that men have started to take notice.

Check this out guys:

In a recent study researchers discovered that men’s skin appears much younger when compared to women at the same age.

In fact, our skin looks on average about 10 to 15 years younger!

But here’s the kicker:

Us men do an incredibly poor job of taking care of our skin…

…like really bad.

For some reason or another, its ingrained in us from when we were an adolescent that when we get into the bathroom we only do the following:

  1. Lather up in the shower with a soap
  2. Wash our hair
  3. Rinse
  4. Dry
  5. Shave (optional)
  6. Apply deodorant (also optional)

And then run to school.

This same 6 step process repeats itself for about 30 to 70 years.

You see though, this is fine for our twenties…

But once we hit the ‘dirty 30’ mark, we start to notice fine lines and wrinkles creeping up around our face – specifically our eyes.

Look:

Here’s the cold hard truth:

We aren’t getting younger.

And no, just like your own father, father time is not in the least bit forgiving.

…and this is what we find ourselves doing:

As the fine lines start to build up, we furiously go and pound queries into Google wondering if there is ANYTHING we can do to reverse the trend.

Sure you could try botox…

….but that’s…well, probably a bit overkill at first, and besides who wants to inject needles into their face?!

Instead, we come across solutions like eye creams, serums, gels, face moisturizers, and all sorts of other creams and lotions leading you to wonder if you are on a PG or X rated site!

So, in this guide we are going to make it DEAD simple for you by breaking down what you NEED to know without wasting time.

Basically, we are breaking things out like this:

  1. A 6 Second Answer Of All The Important Stuff You Need To Know (Noted as ‘Quick Answer’)
  2. Additional Information Should You Want To Learn More About A Particular Area of Eye Creams (Noted as ‘Long(er) Answer’).

So, let’s get going and demystify the %&$@ out of this stuff:

Purpose Of An Eye Cream

Quick Answer: Will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Requires regular application.

Long(er) Answer:

Guys, your eyes are fragile.

In fact, the skin beneath and around your eyes is some of the thinnest on your body (with only the skin behind your ears being the exception).

Therefore, when it comes to products for your eyes, anti-aging or not, they must be formulated very differently than other creams or moisturizers to account for this thinner layer of skin.

With the skin being so thin around your eyes, it is inevitably one of the first areas that will show the signs of aging.

Eye creams, often formulated with key ingredients like Retinol (Vitamin A), Hyaluronic Acid, Caffeine, and others, will work in tandem to diminish fine lines with regular use (we will cover this in more detail in just a minute).

Unfortunately, when it comes to eye creams, there is never one general broad recommendation that us or any other skin care experts can recommend as everyone’s skin is different.

Therefore, testing and patience becomes key when sourcing products.

face cream instead of eye cream

Can’t I Use A Face Cream For My Eyes?!

Quick Answer: No, it won’t yield the best results as it wasn’t formulated for the thin skin around your eyes.

The Long(er) Answer:

Ok get this.

Face cream is for your face…

…your eyes are on your face…

…so why the hell can’t you use your face cream on your eyes?

Well, you can.

But the problem is that you often won’t see the best or most effective results this way.

Face creams, while containing nearly identical active ingredients to their eye cream counterparts, often contain additional fragrances or other additives that normally won’t work well on the thin skin around your eyes.

Remember, the skin around your eyes is REALLY thin.

So even just the addition of an ingredient like fragrance may actually cause unwanted irritation and discomfort.

In addition, the subtle disappearance of the creases and other fine lines around your eyes will not be as pronounced with a face cream as it will with an eye cream.

Although the two product families share a lot of similarities, eye creams to tend to have different ratios (i.e. more collagen boosting ingredients).

Lastly, when you do pick up an eye cream, make sure that its ophthalmologist tested – this ensures that it’s been certified (i.e. safe) to be used around the eye area – most face creams won’t be ophthalmologist tested.

Is DIY Eye Cream A Thing?

Quick Answer: Yes, but we would never advise.

The Long(er) Answer:

While there aren’t too many men’s blogs covering the DIY aspect of eye creams, you can find some women specific blogs that cover this topic.

To be honest, we wouldn’t recommend doing the DIY route, especially if you are experimenting with eye creams for the very first time.

Many of these folks like to recommend essential oils, which are great for therapeutic remedies and scents.

But caution:

If you go a bit too heavy handed on an essential oil, you can severely irritate your skin.

Secondly, these DIY solutions often rely on coconut oil as a base.

While we love coconut oil as much as the next guy, the problem with this particular oil is that its rated rather high on the comedogenic scale (4 out of 5), meaning it will likely clog your pores when applied.

In short, unless you are extremely confident with what you are doing or you are REALLY in tune with what your skin is telling you, we would NEVER recommend that men create their own DIY eye cream as it could actually worsen the skin around your eyes.

Do Eye Creams Work

Do Eye Creams Work Or Is It Just A Placebo?

Quick Answer: In most cases yes, but you need to lower your expectations.

The Long(er) Answer:

Even if you apply the most expensive eye cream to your face daily, the harsh fact remains – you are getting older…hate to break it to you.

I have yet to see any one person or company that can completely stop or reverse the signs of aging.  If you do come across someone that can, please have them get in contact with me!

Eye creams are designed to soften the fine lines, dark circles, and bags beneath and around your eyes.

They are NOT going to completely remove all signs of aging.

Given that your eyes are the first place on your body to show signs of aging due to the thin skin and constant motion, it’s the reason why this product exists in the first place.

If you are in your late 20s, 30s, or 40s, regular use of an eye cream over the course of several weeks (i.e. 4 to 6 weeks), you will start to see a diminishing effect on those lines and dark circles.

Just don’t expect these characteristics of your skin to fully go away.

Eye Creams vs. Serums vs. Gels

Quick Answer: The names aren’t regulated, therefore companies are at liberty on how they brand them.

The Long(er) Answer:

While we did a complete breakdown on eye creams, serums, and gels in this great article, it’s important to note that companies can label their products however they want due to lack of any formal regulation.

However, we can say the following:

Creams DO tend to be…creamy!

Gels often are usually a bit more goo-ey like a standard hair gel.

Serums are very similar texture to gel and sometimes might be sold in a syringe to make them appear more scientific (although the syringe application is usually a bit excessive).

All of them often will rely on the same active ingredients in order to reduce puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles.

when to apply eye cream

When To Apply Eye Cream, Morning or Night?

Quick Answer:  Before you go to bed at night.

The Long(er) Answer:

While there is technically nothing wrong with applying an eye cream in the morning before you head out the door.

When you apply a solution at night, you allow it to work uninterrupted for 8 hours (you are getting 8 hours of sleep right?!).

This means you won’t be rubbing your eyes, blinking, or moving them generally at all while you snooze.

Ultimately it makes it much easier for the eye cream to work its way into those creases and get to work in order to help diminish those lines.

How To Apply An Eye Cream

Quick Answer: Take a pea-sized amount and tap below and around your eyes.

The Long(er) Answer:

When applying eye cream, you can’t apply it like you do any other moisturizer or lotion.

Rubbing vigorously on your eye will only exacerbate the problem with fine lines.

There you will only want to take about a pea sized amount from the jar and then gently tap it around your eyes.

This will ensure not only a better application of the product itself, but will also help to give you a deeper application.

Eye Cream Ingredients

Quick Answer: Retinol, Caffeine, Hyaluronic Acid, Neuropeptides & Peptides, Squalane, Vitamin C, Vitamin E

The Long(er) Answer:

Here’s what each of the above popular ingredients do in order to deliver results:

  • Retinol (Vitamin A) – Helps to promote new skin growth by shedding old and dead skin cells. May cause irritation for some men.  But is incredibly effective at boosting collagen production and eliminating fine lines.  If there was any ingredient on this list you should make sure is in your next eye cream, it’s Retinol.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – Women discovered this secret years ago. Hyaluronic Acid can carry 1000x its weight in water (source).  Helps to quickly diminish the appearance of fine lines through increased water retention.
  • Caffeine – Helps to brighten dark circles as has de-puffing and antioxidant properties. Can also help fight free radicals.
  • Neuropepties & Peptides – Carries many restorative functions that will help to reduce fine lines. Many folks use these ingredients as a replacement for Retinol as it can achieve similar effects.
  • Squalane – A fatty oil (although its considered to be non-comedogenic) that helps to reduce dryness and irritation. Great for adding a layer of moisture to your eyes.
  • Vitamin C – Like caffeine, Vitamin C is a natural antioxidant that will help to fight free radicals and promote healthy skin growth. It’s a water-soluble vitamin and won’t clog your pores.
  • Vitamin E – Provides additional skin soothing benefits and also doubles as a way to fight bags and fine lines.
