Beard Fact:Have an itchy beard or get beardruff? Beard oil can cure that in a few days!

Do You Really Need a Beard Trimmer?

Should You Dye Your Beard - tools of men

First and foremost, you gotta ask yourself the question – do I really need a beard trimmer?

Chances are yes, especially if you are looking for the best one possible!

But if you are going back and forth on determining if its worth it, there are a few things to definitely consider.

First off, if you don’t need to shave that frequently except for the rare occasion (i.e. wedding, job interview, etc), then you can probably get away with just owning a disposable cartridge based razor when those events do come around.

Since the cost is fairly nominal for a cartridge razor, it won’t break the bank when you need to pick one up on a rare occasion.

However, if you can get away with not having to shave on a regular basis, a beard trimmer is especially worth it.

Look:

If you experience horrible razor burn or experience razor bumps any time you shave, a beard trimmer will prevent that from happening altogether!

When you use a beard trimmer, the best part about it, is that the blades from the clipper never touch your skin.

Therefore it completely throws out the window the notion of having any sort of irritation post shave.

This can be a huge deal for many guys that do experience general irritation ever time they shave.

Another bonus to using a beard trimmer is that you can really clean up the edges when necessary any time.  There is no need to worry about taking a shower prior to trimming your beard.

A word of caution though:

For some guys, when they use a beard trimmer, tiny clippings may stick around in your beard.  To try and prevent this from happening, either trim before you jump in the shower or simply splash some water on your face after trimming.

Beard Fact:Did you know that your beard typically grows at a rate of .5 inches (1.25cm) a month!

Even If You Get The Best Beard Trimmer, Your Desired Length Matters

cutting beard with shears - tools of men

So here’s the deal:

If you are looking to grow a yeard (a beard for a year), you should not get a beard trimmer.

In fact, using a beard trimmer is probably one of the worse products you could use to try and maintain it.

You see even the very best beard trimmers have limitations on how far they can clip your beard.

Often times you will see that beard trimmers top out at about .5″ in length.  If your trying to maintain a beard beyond that, its a recipe for disaster.

One slip of the hand and suddenly you have varying lengths for your beard, and lets face it – it’s going to look sloppy and unprofessional.

What’s the alternative?

For men going for a longer beard, you are going to want to use shears instead.

No not your typical Fiskars that you used in elementary school, but actual barber shears.

Barber shears give you much more control than a beard trimmer.  In addition to more control, its important to use shears as they will give a cleaner cut and less tugging than your typical household scissors.

Here’s the kicker though:

For a short stubble, a beard trimmer is going to be your best bet.

Even moreso if you are looking to impress women as well!

According to a study, women are most attracted to men with about 10 days worth of heavy stubble.

With a beard trimmer you can get that look day after day, so you will always look your best.

The Rating Scale Used to Select 2015s Best Beard Trimmer

rating process

Even in 2015, we still have to watch out for the different types of beard trimmers in the marketplace today.

From cheap or flimsy attachments that break after a few uses down to the core ability to be able to cut hair effectively.

There is nothing more frustrating that spending your hard earned cash on a beard trimmer that will ultimately give you just a mediocre performance.

To try and compensate for all the different brands and types of beard trimmers on the market, a lot of the weight goes on the actual trimming itself.

Other facets of the trimmer however will be weighed much less and are considered nice to haves.

For example, a beard trimmer that also has a body grooming attachment doesn’t carry a lot of weight since it goes outside the scope of this rating.

Review of the Panasonic ER-GB80-S Beard Trimmer

Review of the Panasonic ER-GB80-S Beard Trimmer

This Panasonic beard trimmer truly has it all when it comes to beard trimmers.

From its ability to trim your beard all the way from .5mm to 20mm.  To put that into ‘days growth’ perspective .5mm (about .02″) is about the length of your beard 2 days after not shaving.  On the other end this trimmer will go till your beard is about 20mm in length (about .75″).  This is about 45 days of straight growth without trimming your beard.

In addition to having a pretty wide spectrum for beard growth, it also does come with a body grooming attachment that can safely be used for your underarms, chest, shoulders, legs, and any other areas on your body.

It’s important to note though that with the body grooming attachment, you are unable to adjust the length of the trimmer at all.

Expect to have all of your body hair trimmed at the same length with this attachment.

However, one of the favorite part about this trimmer to me compared to my existing trimmer is its ability to operate either corded or uncorded.

With all the trimmers and electric shavers that have the ‘well designed’ cradle.  It drives me nuts when I need to charge my trimmer when I am rushing around in the morning.

If you like to have your skin clutter free, this trimmer gives you that option given its longer battery life.  Expect to get about 50 minutes of trimming accomplished before you will have to plug this trimmer back in.  Of course if the battery is dead, you can still use it while plugged in, which is great if you are ever in a pinch and just need to do a quick touch up.

Like most trimmers on the market, you will have to add a bit of oil before and after each use.  This product is no different.

Also to note about this trimmer in particular is that it does have actually two trimmers on the body.  Your primary one that will be used for your whole beard (and body if you choose), along with a much thinner pop-up trimmer that is great for getting around your nose, sideburns, and ear areas.

The pop-up is definitely welcomed, as trying to get into those hard to reach areas would be a bit rough with the primary trimmer.

The overall weight and feel in the palm of your hand is also pretty good.  Coming in at only 6oz in total weight, you won’t grow tired of using this trimmer even after prolonged use.

Now on to the important part:

The shave!

When it comes to the actual shave, the beard trimmer was one of the best ones reviewed.  The Panasonic ER-GB80-S simply feels like you are getting a barber quality shave without having to actually visit the barbershop.

Like any beard trimmer, if you are using an attachment, you should be pretty safe to use this, even if you do have very sensitive skin.  However if you do skip the attachments and use the trimmer right on your skin, you will likely see some general irritation.

Fortunately though the attachments are pretty good at preventing this from happening.  The closest attachment included in the box will go all the way down to 1mm (about .04″) of growth.

Final thoughts on the Panasonic ER-GB80-S

While this trimmer does offer a lot of functionality, it definitely comes at a steep cost.

This was the most expensive trimmer reviewed and is recommended with a few caveats.

If you want an uncluttered sink or travel often, this trimmer is great given its ability to wear many different hats and perform pretty well.

Should you be going away for a weekend trim, the 50 minute battery should give you more than enough time to make sure that you keep your beard looking great every day!

Review of the TRYM II Beard Trimmer

Review of the TRYM II Beard Trimmer

One of the most popular beard trimmers online, the TRYM II is overall a well rounded beard trimmer, especially for the price.

However like many of the beard trimmers covered, it comes with some downsides as well.

Unlike other beard trimmers reviewed, the TRYM II is very limited on its flexibility to cut hair at just about any level.

In fact, the 4 attachments that come included with with beard trimmer are fairly limited.  Unlike the Pansonic ER-GB80-S that can cut anywhere between .5mm and an impressive 20mm.  The TRYM II can only cut at preset lengths of 1.8mm, 3mm, 6mm, and finally 9mm in length.

This limits in the style and size of the beard that you may want to go with.  For instance 9mm is only .35″ in length.  Your beard grows in at about a rate of .5″ a month.

For an even trim, you only have about 3 weeks before you will want to set down this trimmer and then reach for the shears (only if you want to have a slightly longer length).

One of the biggest selling points to this beard trimmer is the design.

It’s slick:

Seriously, not a lot of buttons to get in the way of just simply trim your beard.  This trimmer cuts through all the fluff and serves a very core purpose – trim your beard.

My favorite part about it though is its versatility in either resting in the base or being plugged into directly.  Either way you don’t have to wait for it to charge before you use it.  The base is a bit on the cheap side, however, doesn’t deter from the purpose of actually holding the beard trimmer upright on your bathroom counter.

In addition to the 4 attachments and base, the TRYM II does come with a bottle of oil that you should put on the blades to keep your trimmer well maintained along with a simple grooming brush for cleaning out the hairs between the blades.

Overall you can get a great trim from your beard with this product and can comfortably clean up underarms, chest, mustache, and other general areas of your body in addition to your beard.

For the actual beard trim itself, you are going to always want to make sure you use one of the 4 attachments to ensure that don’t have any general skin irritation.

The one drawback of the trimmer when compared to others is the lack of a popup detailer for the areas around your nose and sideburns.  The clipper without any attachment for most guys should be enough to get the job done – especially if the trimmer doesn’t have to work around any sort of skin folds.

Other notes regarding the TRYM II is its limitation when it comes to power input.  Capable of only handling 110V, you will not want to travel with this trimmer internationally as there have been reports of men having their trimmer burn out.

Regarding battery life, you should be able to get an adequate amount of time out of a full charge.

Final thoughts on the TRYM II

Overall this is a great entry level beard trimmer that definitely is a worthy contender as one of the best beard trimmers of 2015.

For its relatively low cost, it can get the job done for most men.

However, if you are looking for versatility and flexibility this trimmer just simply doesn’t cut it given its only 4 attachments.

Also if you plan on traveling internationally, this beard trimmer will not suffice given that its only rated to handle 110V.

Review of the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer

Review of the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer

By and far one of the cheapest units being reviewed, this beard and mustache trimmer by Wahl retails for about $15.

However, if you are looking for the perfect beard – this unit is not for you for a few reasons:

The attachments that come with the Wahl, unfortunately are a bit on the flimsy side.

While using the unit, it had slipped out of my hand and the piece broke off immediately, rendering that attachment completely useless.

For the attachments themselves, you are given a few guides – a stubble guide, medium guide ~3mm (1/8″), full guide 4.8mm (3/16″), and a 6 position guide.  The deep attachment itself should be able to accommodate beards up to about 13mm (~ 1/2″) – a months worth of growth.

When compared to the few other units that were reviewed, especially the Panasonic ER-GB80-S, it is lacking the several settings in order to get just the right shave and look that you are going after.

Another note about the Wahl trimmer is that it’s LOUD.  Don’t expect to sneak in a shave quietly in the morning especially if anyone is sleeping in the next room.

With the exception of the attachments, the body of the beard trimmer itself does feel solid.  While a bit on the heavier side, it does seem to feel like its  built well.

As mentioned earlier:

I had dropped it and unfortunately the attachments are too flimsy and one broke immediately, the trimmer itself was completely fine.

A major drawback though for some men is the width of the trimming head.

Overall the head is pretty narrow, while its great for detailing along the nose and sideburn areas, you will be having to spend a bit longer going over the same areas a few times to make sure that you trimmed everything to the same length.

I found myself repeatedly looking into the mirror looking for stray hairs that weren’t initially caught within the first couple of passes.

Another limitation to this trimmer like the TRYM II is that it only supports 110V.  Luckily the battery on this trimmer is pretty good, so a full charge before you head out the door should be adequate.  However, if you are traveling for an extended amount of time, this trimmer simply won’t be compatible with 240V outlets.

One of the shining points of this product though was the number of accessories included!  You get the 4 attachments, a cover for the head, a small comb, mini brush to clean your trimmer, travel pouch, ac adapter, base to set your trimmer in (you can operate the trimmer without it being on the base), and a tube of blade oil.

Final Thoughts on the Wahl 9918-6171 Groomsman Beard and Mustache Trimmer

Overall this is a mediocre beard trimmer at best.

While it can get the job done after several passes, we wish the head was a bit wider to make for more efficient mornings.

The largest drawback to this trimmer though is the flimsy attachments that may break, especially if traveling, and also the volume while using this thing.

Volume of course wasn’t heavily weighted into the final score, but its something you never really think of until you use the product and just notice how loud it really is.

This budget trimmer will get the job done, but your better off in investing with something in a little higher quality.

Review of the Philips Norelco BeardTrimmer 7300

Review of the Philips Norelco BeardTrimmer 7300

One of the most exciting beard trimmers to review is the Philips Norelco BeardTrimmer 7300.

This beard trimmer simply seems to have it all!

First the trimmer settings:

Overall there are 18 settings within this trimmer, about half of the amount offered by the Panasonic ER-GB80-S.  However, the breadth of trim settings should be adequate for most men.

You can shave anywhere between .5mm (~.02″) all the way up to 18mm (~.70″).  In beard length that is between a couple days worth of stubble to about a month and a half of beard growth.

Anything beyond the month and half beard growth, you will want to opt for a pair of shears instead.

If you plan on using this for general body grooming, it will also definitely work out well.

One of the best features of this product is the LED display that shows you what your current length is for stubble size.  If you want to sport a 10mm beard length, but have your chest hair at 2mm, you have that flexibility and don’t have to guess the length any time!

While the beard trimming settings are great, one of the best selling points to this beard trimmer is that it includes a vacuum built right into the handle.

What’s the point of that?

Simply to collect all of your clippings from falling into or clogging your sink!  However, we found that its not perfect in collecting every last clipping.  Typically it does catch about 90% of them though, so if you are like me and have to put down a paper towel prior to each beard trimming, then you really won’t have to worry about that too much any more.

However, I wouldn’t recommend using this while in the car or right before a meeting since it doesn’t collection 100% of the hairs.  A good splash of water will definitely help rinse away any excess hairs that have stuck around.

Other than the actual shave itself, another shining point for this beard trimmer is the battery life.  You can expect to get about 75 minutes of shave time.

What’s even better about the battery, is that it charges insanely quick!  In just an hour you will be fully charged.  But with such a long battery life, you might forget where you place your charger since you won’t need to use it that often.

Speaking of charging, one of the drawbacks that some men might not like is that it doesn’t include a charging base.

Personally I don’t think this is a big deal given that the battery life is pretty adequate at 75 minutes.  But for some this might be a deal breaker.

This beard trimmer doesn’t have a popup razor for sideburns and nose areas, however, most men should be able to get into the hard to reach areas based on the size of the trimmer head alone.

Last but not least, if you are really in a rush, there is a turbo button that will both increase the cutting speed along with the fan speed for the vacuum.  This is especially helpful if you are trying to cut back a lot of thick beard stubble.

For the guys that travel a lot, you will immediately notice that it doesn’t come with a traveling case.  But the unit does have a built in travel lock to prevent it from turning on while in luggage.

While the travel case is missing, it does support 110-240V, so you can safely use it abroad.

Final Thoughts on the Philips Norelco BeardTrimmer 7300

We wished the vacuum picked up 100% of hairs and that the unit itself was washable.  But for an average price of $45 online, its well worth the price and investment.

Overall we absolutely love this beard trimmer.  It has just about everything you want with the exception of a travel case.

It’s a well rounded beard trimmer that can cover all of your grooming needs anywhere between .5mm to 18mm.  With the wide blade length, you can get your beard trimmed in only a couple of minutes.  Also with the impressive 75 minute battery life you will hardly ever have to worry about charging the unit.

If traveling, you can likely leave the charger at home and use it for your entire trip.

Definitely wins the Tools Of Men award of best beard trimmer 2015!
